What to expect with dental fillings
Receiving a filling is usually a quick procedure. The area surrounding the cavity will be numbed with a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. After you are prepared, the decayed enamel can be cleared away with a dental drill that your dentist will select based on the location of the cavity and the amount of decay. After the enamel is removed and the area is disinfected, the cavity will be replaced with the composite resin and set with a special light. Your dentist will then polish the filling material so it matches your natural teeth. You should be able to resume your normal day once your treatment is complete, but you may have sensitivity to hot and cold beverages for a few days. You may use over-the-counter pain medication to address discomfort, but you should not experience any major problems.
