What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable substances that reduce the appearance of age lines on different parts of the face. They can also restore volume to depressed areas and improve lip volume. Dermal fillers such as Juvederm™ are gels made of a natural sugar material which is injected under the skin to add volume and support to the facial structures. There are numerous uses for fillers including

● Depressions in the temples

● Nose

● Under the eyes/tear troughs

● Cheeks

● Lips

● Jaw and chin

● Nasolabial folds (fold between cheek and upper lip)

● Marionette lines (fold between lower cheek and lower lip/chin)

The list above is not comprehensive but includes the most common areas. Fillers are designed to add volume in key areas to achieve an aesthetic goal. Fillers can be used to provide support, camouflage bumps and depressions, smoothen lines, elongate the chin, just to name a few uses.

FIllers are temporary materials and the body absorbs the product after a certain period of time (approximate range 6-12 months).

Am I A Good Candidate For Dermal Fillers?

If you want to reduce the visible signs of aging without undergoing invasive procedures, then you may be an ideal candidate for dermal fillers. It is important for patients to have realistic expectations and a positive outlook.

If you have fine wrinkles, you may not be compatible for a dermal filler treatment and may instead be better served with neuromodulator injections.

Your Consultation

Your initial consultation will include a physical examination of your face. Your concerns will be discussed to determine the best type of filler to address your specific issues. A review of your medical history will be conducted, including current medications, underlying conditions, and recent surgeries and treatments.

A personalized treatment approach will be formulated. You will be informed of any potential complications prior to your procedure.

The Treatment

The target areas will first be cleansed to get rid of any surface impurities. Then a topical anesthetic may be applied to ensure you are comfortable during the procedure. Some types of dermal fillers are already formulated with the local anesthetic lidocaine to minimize discomfort. Injection sites may be marked before our injector starts the process. Dermal fillers are then injected strategically into the skin in precise amounts to achieve the desired results. After the injections, the marking will be cleaned off. The whole procedure can take several minutes to about an hour.

After Your Treatment

You may be able to go back to your normal routine after your dermal filler treatment without prolonged downtime or any recovery period. Minor bruising, swelling, and redness may be experienced; these will disappear shortly. You might notice an “overfilled” appearance or lumps in the first few days, but these should settle and disappear quickly.
